Domestic Departure

An international college student must decide between returning to his city of birth or moving to the country he has come to love. But when his father unexpectedly passes away, his entire family is forced to confront the consequences of loss and leaving.

Billed as “a theatrical love letter to the places we call home”, Domestic Departure was written in 2014 at the request of the Singaporean and Malaysian Students’ Union (SAMSU) at the University of Chicago. In 2015, it was awarded second place for the Olga and Paul Menn Foundation Prize (Play) by the Department of Theater and Performance Studies.

The University of Chicago production of Domestic Departure was produced by SAMSU as part of its annual Citylights series to showcase Singaporean culture. The show ran from May 23-24, 2014.
